Convergence
This exhibition, shown at Watters Gallery Sydney in 2015, was part of an ongoing exploration of the physical and built environment. But rather than documenting only one place, here the images of the coastal landscape of Botany Bay extended south towards Kiama, and the suburban back yards of the inner west were stretched further and further west, via Broken Hill to Papunya in the Western Desert.
The title, ‘Convergence’, literally means a movement towards a point. Composite works, such as the 36 small seascapes that comprise ‘Reading between the Lines (i)’, illustrate this idea. In individual images, as well, there are convergent elements and refrains, whether that of two container ships heading to port, or the tide coming in and going out, or an interior of a shed providing a glimpse into the world outside.
While the works in Convergence are all complete in themselves, they also represent a movement into a major series that is still in progress. This exhibition provides a preview of what is to come in Continuum (see Work in Progress).
