Welcome

I grew up around the Cooks River, in the south-west suburbs of Sydney, where I still live and work. In the mid 1970s I began regularly exhibiting works at Watters Gallery in Sydney, where I held twenty solo exhibitions before the gallery closed in 2019.

Place is always my first interest, and is the collective theme of my work.

Over the years I have done a number of large paintings depicting the suburban and industrial areas of Australian cities including Sydney, Adelaide, Ballarat, Geelong and Broken Hill. I have also painted the NSW coastal area from Botany Bay to Broulee, and the ngurra of the Western Desert around the community of Papunya.

I always begin by walking into a painting, letting the area itself shape the form and content of my portrayal. As I explore, I do sketches on site in paint, pencil and charcoal. When I have gathered enough information I go back to my studio and begin to compose my material into a shape which will express the unique nature of the area and its community.

I hope you enjoy walking around this website.
